I think I spelled that right...

In any case, here is a paper model of Cthulu--based on John Kovalic's illustrations--for you to download and assemble (complete with screaming cultist!).

Life imitating art imitating life...or something

Jun. 22nd, 2009 | 02:39 pm
mood: amused amused

i just logged off and saw an ad, then had to log back on and post this...

there is apparently an application called "blurb" that will give you a "beautifully bound" version of your livejournal.

ZOMGRLY? and...and...if I give them a sample of my handwriting, can they reproduce the text to look like I actually wrote it? But wait, it's not online...so we can't call it a "LIVE-" journal. I guess we can just call it a "journal."

Wait...omg u guyz...so let me get this right. I can get a beautifully bound version of my thoughts reproduced in my own handwriting* called a "journal"? WHY HASN'T ANYONE THOUGHT OF THIS BEFORE!!

*okay, so i know that option isn't actually real, but it makes the example funnier. so just go with it.

Burn, baby burn

Gosh that title is awfully cliché.

Anyway, I practiced poi today (to music) and made it all the way through a song without stopping, without hitting myself (GO ME!) and with lots of footwork/technique. It felt really good, and I can finally say that I feel comfortable enough with my skill level to finally LIGHT IT UP!

Now I just have to find the opportunity to do so...

um?

So apparently an anti-israel group is inciting its members to "de-shelve" Israeli products from Trader Joe's stores across the country...by literally going in and throwing the products on the floor.

Now, the Israel-Palestine conflict is so complicated that I don't even fully understand where I fall on the issue (though I have a pretty good idea), which is really beside the point since I don't want to soapbox for either side of the argument in this post.

Moreover, it just boggles my mind that vandalism always seems to win out over peaceful demonstrations.

*sigh* can't we all just get along?

Talented friends: I haz them

May. 14th, 2009 | 10:23 am

So way back in my college days I had a radio show and on this radio show we had an "illegal" intern named Phoebe. She was my co-host's friend, and later became mine as well.

To cut a long story short, Phoebe was a Photo-J student, and I've always been a fan of her photography skill. Through the time that I've known her she has been staff photographer at the BU Bridge, followed by Photo Editor at the Daily Free Press. She was the photo intern for the Boston Red Sox during one of their championship years (she has her own championship ring!) and now she is a grad student in Photo-J at Mizzou.

All this is to give you good reason to check out her final project for her Picture story class. It's about 3 mins long, and so very worth it.

[Insert witty Star Trek-related title here]

May. 12th, 2009 | 11:33 am
mood: geeky geeky

I'd do it myself, but haven't never seen the original series (gasp! i know...I've only ever watched TNG and maybe a couple stray eps of DS9).

However, that doesn't stop me from appreciating this replica of Captain James T. Kirk's chair, which is available for purchase and use in your very own home.

First yesterday's PVP was all about font selection, now a design blog is featuring Star Trek furniture...I feel like my time has finally come!

The Abominable Charles Christopher

Apr. 30th, 2009 | 07:57 am

so i've tried several times to post a link to this webcomic, each time failing because i don't have the proper vocabulary to describe how truly excellent it is. the art in each panel is a gift to the reader, and the rhythm of the storytelling is, for me at least, nearly perfect.

It alternates between funny and tragic/dramatic, and is currently my favorite webcomic. Which is saying something, since I read several ever since [info]woodwardiocom got me inadvertently hooked on QC*.

Here is the link.

*I never realized just how much "QC" sounds like an acronym for a drug.

Inspiration from an unexpected source

mood: hopeful hopeful

As I was browsing about the internet today, I stumbled upon this lovely video.

Not only is it a reminder that no dream is too big, but also that you definitely can't rely on first impressions alone. I keep listening to this as I'm working, I just can't get enough of it.

I'm not an addict...

Mar. 30th, 2009 | 04:03 pm
mood: curious curious

Ok, well I sort of am (and props if you recognize the song in the title).

I've been listening to TED talks for a month or two now, only one here or there when I had the time. Without fail, each talk takes an issue about which I had a preconceived notion, and turns that notion completely on its head (or in some cases, throws it out completely).

So far, I've listened to talks on:
  • Inspiration, and why being a working artist doesn't automatically mean you have to be self-destructive/self-sabotaging (might sound like an obvious point, but as a working artist I can say that it's not an easy concept to grasp).
  • The evolution of comic books, and how it's connected to the evolution of technology
  • How, when, and why we cheat and how it relates to the current economic situation
  • How kites can generate enough 100% clean energy to power america in the next decade.
All talks seem to be between 5 and 30 minutes. Website is here.

Well, maybe not so strange, considering Seth MacFarlane is a fan of Star Trek...but in any case, the entire cast of Star Trek: TNG (including Denise Crosby) is on The Family Guy this Sunday night!

Check out a (hilarious) clip.

Tea time in the Jolly Green Giant household...

Mar. 18th, 2009 | 04:48 pm
mood: envious envious

So as [info]buxom_bey knows, I have been looking for a quirky/cool piece of décor to put in my new apartment. You know, the type of thing that, when people see it will cause a specific reaction, roughly in this order:
  1. cock of the head to one side
  2. "what the f-?"
  3. <pause and think about whose apartment you're in>
  4. "yeah...that makes sense."
The first candidates for this position were (1) a suit of armor (just $99 from Homegoods!) and (2) a medium-sized ceramic pig, painted in a moorish/azulejo style.

However, when one of my favorite blogs posted this beauty (we'd get it in yellow),I knew we had a winner. Too bad the shipping would probably cost more than the item itself (already pretty pricey).

C'est la vie, no?

For the Geeky Conspiracy Theorists...

Jan. 30th, 2009 | 09:50 am
mood: BRAAAAAAAINSSSS BRAAAAAAAINSSSS

Thanks to a post on Facebook, and then later on the Steve Jackson Games website, I have found out that Austin, TX is under attack by Zombies!! Of course the media and local government are all "No, no...it's just hackers, dude..." but I think we all know what's really going on here.

I also think that the "slim belly" ad on the right (at least on my computer) is very appropriate. As we all know, you have to be in top physical form to outrun the inevitable undead onslaught. Otherwise, you're just zombie junk food.

Kismet

mood: pleased pleased

After a weekend full of new furniture and rearranging & reorganizing our apartment, we finally have a desk and chair in our livingroom. Within a few weeks, we should also have a computer that will allow us to take on design projects at home, which is very exciting!

Now, I have always been envious of designers/artists who have space in their home studio to have an inspiration board, and have looked forward to the time when I could have one in my own home studio.

For those of you that have been inside my apartment (and who are probably scratching your heads thinking "where the heck did they find space for a desk and chair?"), you know that there really isn't space for an inspiration board. Which is kind of disappointing.

Proof positive that you don't need a canvas to be an artist

Jan. 14th, 2009 | 10:55 am

well, i guess that depends on how literally you define "canvas."

I was just sent an email by Apartment Therapy leading me to this Montreal loft. How cool are the furnishings and the way the owner designed every part of his space down to the last detail?

I'd probably get sick of living here eventually (the decor is a little to warm for me) but you really have to appreciate the effort and creativity that went into this loft.

God I love that song...

But it at least partially holds true as well. I LOVE days like this with the pouring and the darkness. Perfect weather for a book or a movie and a hot drink.

Happy Friday!
